About CNCMS

Our Initiative

The Centre for Nineteenth-Century Music Studies (CNCMS) is a dedicated research and development body established by an FDI project in 2020, aiming at increasing research capacity within the Doctoral School and the Direction for Research, Innovation and Information (DCII) of the National University of Music Bucharest (UNMB).

CNCMS proposes an institutional platform for the promotion of top research in the field of music and related areas, focusing on the 19th century, through scientific and educational cooperation with national and international partners.

Our Objectives

  • To create an international cooperation network offering PhD candidates and UNMB academic and research staff as well as CNCMS partner institutions scientific resources and managerial expertise, with the goal of initiating and running interdisciplinary projects on 19th-century musics at a national and international level;
  • To facilitate and intensify knowledge transfer and exchange of experience between doctoral programs in the field of Music by identifying and attracting international experts (musicologists, ethnomusicologists, composers, conductors, cultural and artistic institutions managers) following partnerships with similar institutions in Romania and abroad (universities, research institutes, professional organisations etc.);
  • To organise conferences, workshops, concerts, masterclasses focusing on 19th-century musics;
  • To expand the CNCMS database and to constantly enhance it by adding new resources useful in investigating 19th-century musics;
  • To publish researches and scores (scientific papers, dedicated volumes, critical editions of manuscripts and period prints, CDs and DVDs);
  • To popularize interest in researching the 19th century and to promote the activities of CNCMS, of the UNMB Direction for Research, Innovation and Information (DCII) and of the Doctoral School nationally, regionally and internationally.
